This is part 2 of a 5 part series. Every Tuesday and Thursday we have 4-5 guys who will come in to our office to simply serve. Why do they come? All of them have at least expressed interest in being youth pastors or in a full time vocational ministry.
They are in the book of James and going chapter by chapter and looking at it from a “parent’s perspective”. We’ve had some suggestions that they do the same thing from a teenager’s perspective towards their parents. We might do that.
If you haven’t read the first post, I’d encourage you to take a look. There are some great applications from James chapter 1.
So, here’s chapter 2.
2:1-3 When a parent shows favoritism of children, it can create bitterness in one and entitlement in another.
2:4 Parents who show discrimination towards/against certain people shape the who their children discriminate.
2:5-7 Materialistic parents hinder their children from having a God dependent and reliant faith.
2:8 Remember “who is your neighbor” and love those people. Your children see that.
2:11 Parents have a responsibility to teach “God’s laws” and not just rely on the church to do it.
2:14 Show your children that you have faith. “Actions speak louder than words”
2:15-16 Look for opportunities for your children to act on their faith. Ex: feed homeless together as a family
2:19 Teaching an intellectual faith only can even be destructive. Do your children know God?
2:21-26 “These are just examples of how others did it…be like them, except the sacrificing your son part”
